About: IRKUTSK ENSEMBLE AUTHENTIC MUSIC, Irkutsk, Russia
The ensemble was created 10 years ago. It presents the reconstituted songs of Priangar’s inhabitants displaced during the construction of the hydro power plant in Irkutsk. The members of the ensemble have collected the material during their research in the archives and ethnographic expeditions. The construction of the hydroelectric station brought about significant changes: not only did the villages disappear under water, but the traditions of Priangar’s inhabitants vanished as well, and their music sank into oblivion. An attempt to revive the ancestors’ voices was taken by Aleksander Rogaczewski. In his opinion these are not only the songs of the displaced persons, but the testament, a particular moral code of the centuries passed. The singers emphasise ritualistic character of this music.
