“With his trio ZOOM (Nils Wogram (tb) and Philipp Schaufelberger (guit)), Niggli has played numerous concerts and at jazz festivals (Moers, Saalfelden, Salzburg, Mulhouse) all over Europe. The trio’s first CD, Spawn of Speed was celebrated as a masterpiece by the international jazz press. Now Niggli has extended his trio with two equally independent soloists and thus formed a highly promising European quintet, which gave its brilliant debut concert at the Willisau Jazz Festival in 2002.
Even as a quintet, ZOOM remains jazz combo, chamber music ensemble and rock band in one. Accordingly the music races through the peaks and valleys of today’s music, does a bow to tradition here, a jump into the unknown there. Niggli’s compositions have a entirely particular style that is tailor-made for “interpreters,” or that allows them many liberties. Anything we listeners take for granted is taken by surprise via unexpected interventions and made dynamic; forms are broken up; risk is played. Vehemence is found next to elegy, density is paired with rest, essence empties into exuberance, and complexity combines with intensive interplay …. ZOOM has become one of the most exciting bands in the current jazz scene.
All of the musicians excel at an extremely wide range of styles and have great musical curiosity: prerequisites to bring a band on the stage that does not fall into routine and convention, but rather constantly probes the limits of current music, listens into the echoes of great musics, but also focuses simultaneously on its own voices.” (From Gig-Ant)
