The 4th installment of the contemporary dance series - “Wibracje Taneczne / Dance Vibrations” - presents “Prawa półkula (Right Hemisphere)” by the choreographer Marysia Stokłosa. The title makes a reference to the right hemisphere of the human brain, and the project is inspired by and aims to explore the qualities attributed to that side of the brain, such as spatial abilities, visual imaging and music.

Forum of Possibility 2009

The ARKA Theatre in Wrocław regularly organizes theatre workshops for people with intellectual disabilities or mental illness for the purpose of social and professional rehabilitation. Their public-funded project “Forum Możliwości (Forum of Possibility)” aims to extend their service to other cities in Lower Silesia, and in 2009, they organized the 2nd edition of the project.

From July through November 2009, we followed their workshops held in various cities of Lower Silesia and documented the project in video. During the documentation, we interviewed several people working daily with those with disabilities or illness and asked them about the benefit of theatre workshop as a method of rehabilitation.

This video features a new track from their upcoming 2nd album.

On 26.09.2009, at the Wrocław Puppet Theatre (Teatr Lalek / pl. Teatralny 4), as a part of the European Day of Languages events, Alexandre Marquézy and Patrycja Łacina-Miarka performed a paper theatre play “Les frères corses (The Corsican Brothers)” in French. The project of the paper theatre at the Wrocław Puppet Theatre aims to reproduce the paper theatre of the 19th century when this form of theatre was very popular. During the preparation of this performance in French, however, the actors decided to update the format. In our interview, Alexandre Marquézy tells us what change they made and why.

The name of this award-winning trio from Kraków - “Di Galitzyaner Klezmorim” - means in Yiddish “Galician musicians,” and as the name indicates, their music has its root in the tradition of Jewish vocal music of the Central-Eastern Europe. With Mariola Śpiewak in clarinet, Grzegorz Śpiewak in accordion, and Rafał Seweryniak in contrabass.

From the press release:
“The renowned playwright Marc P. Smith, Boston, USA, continues to follow his life’s goal to remember examples of heroic resistance against the Nazis in Poland and Germany.

After long research and many personal encounters with surviving family members he wrote in 2007 his play A Journey to Kreisau about Helmuth James and Freya von Moltke, who ‘identified and strengthened the moral standards within their group… and it was his vision, that endured.’

Now Smith remembers the life of Jan Karski, who worked in life threatening situations for Sikorski’s Exile government to try to stop the Holocaust in Poland – but nobody in London or Washington, where he met Roosevelt in 1943, believed his eyewitness of Oswiecim / Auschwitz.

The playwright Marc P. Smith will coach young Polish and German actors during the Workshop DenkFest-1 in Krzyzowa / Kreisau for this and further performances and will be present at the premiere in Wroclaw. He says: ‘Jan Karski is essential for young people today to identify with heroes of their own country so that they may learn to stand up for ethical values.’”

The Mandala festival is an annual international art performance festival, and the themes of this year were 1) the meeting of art performance and choreography and 2) the question of identity and alienation. In this video, Adam Kamiński - the curator of the festival - elaborates on the selection of these themes.

Once again, it is the season for cleaning our video backlog. For the next few weeks, we will be editing and publishing the materials from our archive. The first video in this summer clearance series is the recording from the concert of LILA at MLECZARNIA on 26.04.2009.
LILA is a free-style jazz quartet from Switzerland, and the concert took place as a part of “Swiss Club 2009.” “Swiss Club” is a project by Gig-Ant, aiming to promote new (jazz) sounds of Swiss music scenes in Poland.

Brave Festival: Prayers of the World

With the keyword “Against Cultural Exile,” each year Brave Festival brings to Wrocław traditional performing artists and musicians from all over the world.

This year’s focus is “Prayers of the World,” and the main feature is the presentation of various traditional rites of religiosity or spirituality. The program includes: a Zikr ritual by a women’s group from Georgia, a Tanzanian libation ritual, Korean mudang rituals, Corsican religious polyphonies, and also, from the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, healing dance from Malawi, Ahellil chants of the Berbers of Algeria, and the Azer songs of Mugham.

Monday 16.03.2009, Teatr Lalek - at the gala evening of this year’s Journées de la Francophonie fesvial, a French dance company Marie-Laure Agrapart & Cie, led by dancer/choreographer Marie-Laure Agrapart, performed a piece entitled “Àuctor.” “Àuctor” takes its inspiration from the poetry of Anna Akhmatova, and the dance - performed here by 4 female dancers - is an essay on the theme of femininity in confrontation with silence.

Mike Reed is a musician, composer and presenter based in Chicago.

As a drummer, Reed has been part of the vibrant Chicago jazz and improvised music community since 1997. He has performed regularly with David Boykin, Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Axel Doerner, Josh Abrams, Jim Baker, Rob Mazurek and others. As a leader Reed has released two critically acclaimed albums by his cross-genre group The Treehouse Project, and, more recently, the debut recording of his quintet Loose Assembly and a record of improvised duets. He currently is a member of The David Boykin Expanse, Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra and Josh Berman Quartet.

For nearly a decade Reed has also established himself as a presenter of musical performances. In 2001 Reed founded the Emerging Improvisers Organization, a not-for-profit whose weekly series of jazz and improvised music has been lauded as one of the finest in the Midwest. In December 2005 Reed was named among the Chicagoans of the Year by The Chicago Tribune for his work as lead organizer of the Intonation Music Festival.

Revenant Sound

On Tuesday 17.02.2009, Galeria ENTROPIA hosted a sound performance entitled “Revenant Sound,” led by John Grzinich & Patrick McGinley. “Revenant Sound” is an open project around site-specific acoustics and sounds. The project is “open” first of all to the different sites and their physical as well as acoustic uniqueness. It is also “open” to the people present on a given site: it breaks down the barrier between “performer” and “spectator” and invites the public to take active part in the formation of a sound landscape. In our interview, Patrick McGinley elaborates more on the project and the sound.

This performance was presented as a part of the “Athletic_Cinema” series.

Szewska 37) - Under the heading of “Terra Incognita III,” Zbigniew Pilch played various violin pieces from the 18th century. “Terra Incognita” is Pilch’s personal project, and it aims to present the compositions which are often confined in the academic and professional circles to the wider public. This concert took place as the second concert in this year’s “Enjoy Mondays” (”Polubisz Poniedziałki”) festival.

The next concert of “Enjoy Mondays” will take place this coming Monday (01.12.2008) at Browar Mieszczański (ul. Hubska 44-48). The title is “Interactions,” and Jagoda Szmytka (electronics), Marta Niedźwiecka (harpsichord) and Elżbieta Woleńska (flute) will play compositions from the 17th & 18th centuries as well as from the 21st century.

The award-winning theatre company Teatr Pieśń Kozła premieres its new production “Macbeth” this weekend. Here’s the performance schedule this month:

From the press release:
“‘Macbeth’ is born out of the ongoing experimentation and research of Teatr Piesn Kozla and is the fruit of our collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company. This performance explores the musicality of Shakespeare’s poetry – the company have been searching for the colours and sounds of Shakespearian language, while at the same time investigating the roots of this drama.

Whereas ‘Lacrimosa’ was the final stage of the company’s work on myth, ‘Macbeth’ continues the ensemble’s deep interest in tragedy (the company’s name comes from the Greek tragon ode meaning song of the goat) and opens up new spaces for artistic exploration. The first work-in-progress of ‘Macbeth’ was shown in February 2007 at the Swan Theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company) in Stratford-upon-Avon during the Complete Works festival.

Although we call these showings the premiere, our performances are, in fact, always work-in-progress. The audience will witness a stage in the constant development of this performance and in our search for new meanings within the drama.

The cast of this performance is international: with actors from England, Finland, Scotland, Wales and Poland.”

Włodkowica 5) - The local multi-instrumental group “Małe Instrumenty“ played a late-night concert as a part of Avant Music Festival (19.09.2008 - 27.10.2008). “Małe Instrumenty” means “Small instruments,” and as its name indicates, the stage is filled with many small instruments; Some of them look like toys for children and some others really are just toys for children. In the interview, we asked Paweł Romańczuk, a key member of the band, how they musically integrate the use of those toys that never seem to make the sounds we want, and how much of their performance involves improvisation.

French Literature & Culture in Paper Theatre

At this special edition of the series “Art of Reading: Paper Theatre (Sztuka czytania – Teatr papierowy),” the Lalek Theatre premieres 2 pieces taken from French authors’ works, with the presence of the director Jan Peszek.

The first piece - “Opowieści z ul. Broca (Contes de la rue Broca)” by Peirre Gripari - is for children, and the second piece - “Kręciek i plankton (Vercoquin et le plancton)” by Boris Vian - is for the grown-ups only.

The spectacles will begin on Saturday (13.09) at 16:00 and Sunday (14.09) at 12:00 - After the first piece, there will be a puppet theatre workshop for children, while the accompanying adults could enjoy the second piece.

The spectacles will be accompanied by another short piece - “Les frères corses” by Alexandre Dumas - in the classical paper theatre form.

There will be also a display of a great collection of paper theatres from 19th century, presented here by a French puppet theatre artist, Alain Lecucq. The collection contains more than 150 original paper theatres from England, France, Germany and other European countries.

The reading will be in Polish.

This Friday, at Jazz Club Rura, Jonquil will perform one and the only concert in Poland.

Jonquil is an Oxford bedroom recording project turned band, centered around 20 year old Hugo Manuel.

In borrowing Kit Monteith, Ben Rimmer and Jody Prewett from young Oxford band Wait For Coniston along with Sam Scott from Youthmovies, the line up was expanded to include bouzouki, guitar, violin, drums, flugelhorn and double bass.

The band started with a desire to use acoustic instruments. Influenced by the likes of Joan Baez, The Microphones, Akron/Family, Swans and Stars of the Lid, Hugo spent a year collecting melodicas, reed organs, glockenspiels, dulcimers, whistles…

The result was ‘Sunny Casinos’: a late night listening album of beautiful & engrossing dark gentle songs, dense summer drones, fairground field recordings and creeped-out dusty attic music. Exploding Star Orchestra

Last December, Exploding Star Orchestra played a concert in Wrocław and this week they are back in Poland. This time they are playing in Łodź, at a jazz club Jazzga, as a part of the Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures 2008. To give you a taste of their performance, we present you here the recording from the last year’s concert in Wrocław with a brief interview with the director and composer of the orchestra, Rob Mazurek. It was recorded on 02.12.2007 at Lwow Cinema (ul. Hallera 15) and the concert was organized by OPT.

Wrocław Non Stop 08, Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych (ul. Wystawowa 1) - the video installation by Louis Rollinde - “W.EARTH” - was presented as one of the major events at this year’s Wrocław Non Stop Festival. The installation was inspired by the satellite images from the Google Earth, and Louis Rollinde worked on those still images and transformed them into a set of gigantic installations. In this video, Louis Rollinde leads a quick tour around the installations and talks about the ideas behind the work. The music/sound in this video are performed live on site by Christian Sebille. - N.B. The audio is in French

The 3rd edition of the Festival of Trailers (Festiwal Zwiastunów) takes place this weekend at Trzebnica, a city just outside of Wrocław. As the name indicates, it is the festival of the short trailer films, but the programme includes also the projections of international documentary films, controversial advertizement and animated films. The projection will take place in the open air cinema and you will be lying on beds to watch the movies. Shakespeare Wrocław - “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

In May 2008, Shakespeare Wrocław performed “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the courtyard of Club Pracoffnia (ul. Więzienna 6). Shakespeare Wrocław is an amateur/student theatre group led by the director John White, and they perform each year one Shakespearean play in the original English dialogue (Read more about Shakespeare Wrocław and their performance here). After one of their performance, we interviewed the group and asked them about the choice of this year’s play and the challenge they encountered during the preparation.

Miloopa is a Wrocław-based Drum’n'Bass unit. Their music, however, is not limited to Drum’n'Bass: Miloopa incorporates many different music forms, such as Jungle, Soul, Downtempo, etc.

OPT (Ośrodek Postaw Twórczych) organizes with CRK (Centrum Reanimacji Kultury) an open-air picnic. The main feature of the evening is the projection of the silent movie “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” (1920), accompanied by the live performance of Devil Music Ensemble (US) with their original score.

The Devil Music Ensemble, formed in Boston in 1999, is comprised of Brendon Wood on guitars, lap steel, and synthesizer; Jonah Rapino on electric viola, vibraphone, and synthesizer; and Tim Nylander on drums, percussion and synthesizer.

“The Devil Music Ensemble has established itself as one of the primary American groups composing and performing scores for silent films, and can be spoken of in the same breath as groups like the Alloy Orchestra and the Tin Hat Trio.”

The DME has been on 6 U.S. tours and one European tour playing soundtracks for silent film; performing in museums, theaters, performing arts centers, and college campuses. “Dr. Jekyll (John Barrymore) is a London doctor, progressive in his medical research, conservative and repressed in his personal life. A friend encourages him to explore the underside of life with a visit to a London music hall. Dancer Nita Naldi arouses Jekyll’s repressed sensibilities, and when she embraces him, the doctor runs off. Later, Jekyll speculates on the advantage of separating the two natures of man in different bodies- one could “yield to every evil impulse, yet leave the soul untouched.” Jekyll’s scientific passion leads him to a formula that brings out his other side, Mr. Hyde, a man without a conscience.
The initial transformation scene is deservedly famous, achieving its power solely with Barrymore’s expressive features. Visually, Barrymore’s Hyde is not a monster, but the physical result of the effect of a dissolute life. Hyde becomes more decrepit as the film progresses, while Jekyll’s goodness falters. Hyde pursues women, stealing their honor, while his alter ego Jekyll is uncomfortable even with his fiancee. This distinct duality is further developed when Hyde’s depravities get worse and worse, and the two sensibilities begin to become less distinct.
The scenario goes to the essence of the story: the thin line between good and evil in the same person, and the inevitable conflict between the two. On an unconscious level, the film is also about different classes in the same city. The behavior of the working class Hyde is considered strange, but acceptable, until he attacks someone from the upper class (the father of Jekyll’s fiancee). Just as Hyde allowed Jekyll to indulge in forbidden pastimes, the movies allowed Barrymore to indulge his upscale and downscale sensibilities. As a measure of the star’s versatility, while this film was in production during the day at Paramount’s New York studio, John Barrymore was starring as Richard III on Broadway each evening.” —1997 David Pierce

John White works as English teacher, but he is also a theatre actor/director. At the beginning of the academic year, he organizes a group with students who are interested in working with Shakespeare’s original texts, or simply in acting, and prepares a performance for the end of the year. The previous performance took place in 2006 and the group presented the comedy “The Merry Wives of Windsor” (see our video coverage: Shakespeare Wrocław).

William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (”The Lovers”) tells the story of four lovers who elope into the forest to escape a forced marriage brought on by Athenian law. There they are met by trickster fairies who live in the woods and who, using a magic love flower, lead the lovers astray in a long night of jealousy and misunderstandings. When they awake in the morning they have come to a new appreciation of each other’s love.

On 18.05.2008 at Café Mleczarnia (ul. Włodkowica 5), the exhibition by Anka Mierzejewska - “Ciacho w Mleczarni” – opened the 2-week long festival “Czyli Wrocław,” the first cultural initiative by Mleczarnia Foundation. The exhibition title “Ciacho w Mleczarni” is here given a double meaning: one is literally “cake (ciastko) in Mleczarnia” - making a reference to Mleczarnia as café - and the second meaning is from the Polish slang “Ciacho” - “someone hot, attractive.” In the video interview, Asia Męczyńska, the organizer of the event, and the artist Anka Mierzejewska talk about the idea of the exhibition, the place and the paintings.

Bartek Gil: Where do you think acid/psychodelic music re-gains its strength from?
Atsuo: いろいろな過去音源の発掘作業も充実してるからね。みんな未来に絶望してる風潮もあると思う。だから過去に夢を見ようとしている。過去の方が捏造（批評）することに、あまり責任を問われないし、危険の伴わない謎解きをしているように感じる。未来を作って行く方が危険で、やっぱり意義のあることだと思うんだが。
[Well, a lot of audio materials from the past have been restored and are readily accessible today. And also there is this hopelessness that everyone seems to feel about the future. That’s why everyone tries to find dream in the past. There is much less responsibility in fabricating (criticizing) the past, and it feels like solving puzzles without taking any risk. It is more risky to move towards future, but I think it would be more meaningful...]

Q. it used to be popular ages ago and apparently it seems now it’s attractive to people who seek for more contemporary commentary and interpretation of reality. Would you say it’s blossoming now or it’s just that it’s being hyped at the moment?
現在はいろいろな価値観が共存しているし、サイケデリックのムーブメントはあの６０年代後半の未開な文化の状態であったからこそ熱病のように世界中に広がったんだろう。それは音楽というよりは現象であったろうと思うし、今の時代はパソコンの画面の中で”経験すること無く”物事が進行して行く。そんな時代への憧れもあるんだろうね。
[I think the psychedelic movement spread all over the world like a fever only because of that wild, untamed period that the end of the 60’s was. It was more like a cultural phenomenon and not simply about music. But today many different values and tastes coexist, and things happen in the computer screen “without actually experiencing them.” It may be that people feel a certain longing for that period.]

Q. (by the way - do you yourself have an interest in contemporary music? who would you call a cutting-egde artist?)
そういった意味で、今自分たちは”音楽”をやるつもりは全くない。音楽には興味が無い。音楽というジャンルにいながら”経験”を促すきっかけを作るようなことをBorisはやるようになってきている。自覚的、コンセプチュアルにやっている訳でなく、面白いことを求めて行ったらこういうことになって行ったね。
だからSunn o)))とかはやはり経験そのものだし、すごく刺激になるし、影響も受けてるね。
[We have now no intention of making “music” in that sense. We have no interest in music at all. Boris has been doing things that could help setting off the “experience” without leaving the music as a genre. But we are not doing that self-consciously or conceptually. It just happened this way when we pursued what interested us.
So, in that sense, we get inspiration from the bands like Sunn o))), for example, which is a pure experience, and we also get some influences from them.]

Q. How spontaneous you are when it comes to recording? It seems that not necessarily every sound appearing on an album is deeply thought-out and you prefer recording live to overdub. If it’s right, does it come more from pre-recording assumptions or your general attitute about creative process?
”Smile”のレコーディングではどちらの側面もあったね。自然体、つまりインプロビゼーションを主体に、記録された素材を曲にして行く（自然に聴こえなくしていく）やり方。パズルのようにリフを組み合わせつつ、そのあとのアクシデントと出会わせるやり方。結局は”混沌と秩序”そのどちらかに偏ること自体がつまらない。混沌と秩序をひとつの作品のなかに共存させることが、僕らにとってスリリングな音として経験できるものだな
[The recording of “Smile” had both. We create a tune from recorded materials on the basis of spontaneity – or, improvisation – and make it less natural and spontaneous as we go along. While we combine riffs like a puzzle, we also break it down. In the end, it is boring if we must choose between “chaos and the order.” To make “chaos and the order” coexist in one work – that’s the thing that we can “experience” as exciting sound.]

Q. Your discography is impressive. One can have an impression that incessant stream of consciousness and need of communication is crucial for the band. Where would you place it on your ladder of values (especially when you were to confront it with formal limitations)?
制限は無いんだよね。いつも。レーベルからいつまでに！ってデッドラインが決められることはないし。
レコーディングも自分達でやってるから、コストも他のバンドに比べてすごく低いと思うよ。
だからレコーディング時間の制約も無い。
それで、「incessant stream of consciousness」ってのは実は誰でも本当は持ってるものだと思うんだよね。世間一般的に「日常は退屈なもの」とかそういうことになってるだけで。目の前の現実に目を向けたらそこにはスリリングな日常が本当はあって、そうしたら意識はドライブせざるを得ないと思うんだけど。僕らは普通のことを普通にやってるとおもうよ。
それとコミュニケーションの本質は「わからないこと」だと思ってる。理解し合うことがコミュニケーションではない。わからないまま、もやもやした気持ちも抱えながら、保留の状態で進むこともすごく大切なことだと思うんだ。バンドの中ではそれほど言葉によるコミュニケーションに重きを置いてないし、制作の過程の中では音に耳を傾ける時間、その音が世界にどう響いていくのか感じること重要になってくる。
[There is no formal limitation. We don’t have a deadline from a label. Because we record by ourselves, I think the cost is much lower than other bands, and that’s why there is no limit to the recording time, either.
We think that “incessant stream of consciousness” is something that everyone has. It’s just that people already decided that “everyday life is boring,” but I think if you take a close look at the reality in front of us, you’ll see an exciting life and your mind will just get going. I just feel that we are not doing anything more than that ordinary thing.
By the way, I think the essence of communication is “not to understand.” Understanding one another is not a communication. I think it is important to continue even in suspension, without understanding and with some unresolved feeling. In our band, the communication with words is not that important, and in the creative process, it is more important to pay attention to the sound and feel what impression that sound is going to leave in the world.]

Q. As this is an interview for an on-line magazine and your albums are often limited to a few thousands copies what do you think would/can make people realize that it’s not the more CDs you rip off the more cool you are?
お？これは僕らの音源が「rip off」と言われてるってこと？（笑）リリースの枚数が限定になるのは、僕らのアイデアがコストがかかりすぎるし、一般的な製造ラインには無いことが多い。だから限定になってしまうんだけど。でも見たいものは見たい。作り手の強靭な欲求がなければ、それを買ってくれる人にも「新しい経験」は訪れないと思ってる。そういう意味でも、ぼくらは自分達の経験という快楽を追求するよ。
あとはそれが買ってくれた人にとって「良い経験」となることを願うのみ。だね。誠実に、ひとつづつまじめにコツコツやってくしかない。今までもそうやってきたし、これからも変わらない
[Are you referring to the fact that people are calling our audio sources a “rip off”? (laugh) The number of our albums is limited, because our ideas cost too much and often not commonly available. That’s why the release gets limited, but still we want to do what we want to do. If we don’t have a strong enough will to pursue what we want to do, I think the people who buy our albums won’t get any “new experience.” In that sense, we will continue to explore the pleasure called our own experience.
We just hope that this will be a “good experience” for people who buy. All we can do is to work sincerely, and one step at a time. We did it like that until now, and that won’t change.]

Q. You play with growing and shellac on this tour. what are these bands to you?
Growingはアメリカでも一緒にツアーもやったりしていて、個人的にいろいろ共感できる部分が多い。
そのことを彼らと話したことはないけど、言葉でわかり合う以上に、一緒に”同じ空間”に居られるってことが重要だな、って思うし。すごい感じのいい奴らだし、彼らの音ももちろん好き。
[With Growing, we also toured together in U.S.A. and personally there are a lot of things that I feel close to. I’ve never told them, but the fact that we share the “same space” matters to me, much more than understanding one another with words. They are nice guys and, of course, I like their sound as well.]

Q. do you feel any kin towards (ex)kranky bands and is steve albini’s attitute appealing to you anyhow?
Rapemanは大好きなバンドだったな。最悪な名前だけど。最悪な名前は日本の漫画からってことも知ってるけど。彼の録音方法は僕らのそれとは対極にあると感じるね。
[Rapeman was a band I liked a lot, although it had a terrible name. And I also know that they took this terrible name from a Japanese manga. I feel that the way he records is exactly opposite to ours.]

Q. Your famed jumps over your drum kit, stage diving and crowdsufring are more an effect of dealing with real emotions or rather a result of awareness that people expect a bit of spectacular show from such a conceptual band.
「いやいや、そんなの嘘の感情で、演出、お約束に決まってるじゃん。」って言った方が期待に添えるのかな？（笑）それとも「ライブ中は感情が昂って、訳が分からなくなってどうしてもあんな風になってしまうんだ。」って言う方がいい？
この二つは僕にとってどちらも本当で、どちらも嘘。ただ、ショウを「オーディエンスと一緒に楽しみたい」とはいつも思ってるよ。
また次回会場で会えることを楽しみにしてる。
[Would you like me to say: “No, no, of course all the emotion is a fake and it’s all just a performance”? (laugh). Or, do you prefer: “During the live concert, I get all excited and things just happen that way”?
For me, both of them are true, and both of them are just a lie. But I always want to enjoy the show with the public and that feeling is true.
I’m looking forward to seeing you again at a concert.]

Under the direction of Mariusz Smolij, Wrocław Chamber Orchestra “Leopoldinum”will play the compositions by Andrzej Panufnik, Aaron Copland, Anton Arensky and Joseph Haydn.

“Compositions of Arensky, who tutored such famous composers like Rimsky-Korsakov, Rakhmaninov and Scriabin among others, are not very well known, and his Variations on a theme of P. Tchaikovsky will be performed for the first time by the Leopoldinum orchestra. Igor Cecocho, trumpet soloist of the concert, will perform Andrzej Panufnik’s Concerto in modo antico. This piece was successfully recorded by both artists – Mariusz Smolij and Igor Cecocho for the firm Naxos (with the Polish Chamber Orchestra) in 2006.
Quiet City was originally composed by Aaron Copland as theater music for the Irvin Shaw’s play. But in this form was performed for two weeks only, later on (since 1941) only in the concert version. Two soloists will perform Quiet City: Igor Cecocho, trumpet and Waldemar Korpak, cor anglais.
Haydn’s symphony La Passione will conclude the program.” (From the press release)

Francophonie 2008 - Tales of Perrault

This is the last podcast episode from this year’s Journées de la Francophonie (07.03-16.03.2008) in Wrocław.
Arka Theatre presented a theatrical adaptation of 2 of the most famous tales by Charles Perrault: “Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood)” and “Les Fées (Diamonds and Toads).” The play was made primarily for children, but, just like the original stories by Perrault, it was just as enjoyable for the grown-ups. In our interview, the actor Alexandre Marquézy briefly explains the idea behind this adaptation.

Early German Harpsichord

On 29.30.2008 at Ossolineum Hall - this evening’s concert was organized with the heading: “Early German Harpsichord.” In this video, you will see the fragments of a performance of the compositions by Georg Bochm (1661-1733) & Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644-1704). Performing are Urszula Danielewicz (harpsichord), John Ma (violin) & Myriam Rignol (viola da gamba).
This concert was presented as part of the 4th-annual Harpsichord Music Days (26.03-30.03.2008), organized by Ars&Studium.

The presentation of the anthropological version of the performance: “Lacrimosa.”
The evening will be divided in three parts.

First part (IMPRESSION): the film showing the Anastenaria – the ritual of fire walking that inspired the movement aspect of the performance. The movie was recorded in Greece in 2003.

Second part (IMPROVISATION): the training session, in which the actors improvise upon the movement aspect observed during the ritual of Anastenaria. The training also illustrates the unique technique of coordination, used by the practitioners of Pieśń Kozła Theatre in their work with students and preparation of new performances.

Third part (STRUCTURE): the performance “Lacrimosa” as a result of both impression and improvisation on the theme.

Francophonie 2008 - A’Corps

11.03.2008, Teatr Lalek - A’Corps dance company performed a piece entitled “Nous sommes tous…” for the general public. It was the second performance, following the one at the opening ceremony of Journées de la Francophonie the night before. The performance was offered for free, and many young people took advantage of the occasion.

Francophonie 2008 - Davy Sicard

The first video podcast from this year’s Journées de la Francophonie (07.03-16.03.2008) presents the concert by Davy Sicard (08.03.2008 at Jazz Club Rura).
The singer Davy Sicard was born in the Réunion Island and is currently living in France. He sang in the mixture of Réunionnaise Creole and French, and, although the lyrics reflected his personal voice, just like the language in which they were sung, the history and the culture of the Réunion Island were also visibly present in many different ways (for example, the selection of themes and topics, words, or stories). “Journées de la Francophonie” is a celebration of the diversity of people who speak French and their culture, and the concert of Davy Sicard could not have been more appropriate as an opening act for the festival.

Commemorating the establishment of the intergovernmental organization of “Francophones,” the festival “Journées de la Francophonie” organizes various cultural events, exhibitions and a series of conferences every year. On Friday 07.03.2008, as a part of the festival, a round-table discussion on the current cultural relationship between France and Poland – and Wrocław in particular – will be held at Alliance Francaise (Biblioteka Wojdwodska, Rynek 58 3rd Floor). The discussion will be in French and start at 18:00. Free admissions.

The second concert of the “Enjoy Mondays” (“Polubisz Poniedziałki”) festival (08.10.07-17.12.07) featured a newly formed wind-instrument quintet - La Forza Gentile. In this video, Marek Niewiedział from La Forza Gentile talks about their project and the motivation behind it.
The concert “La Forza Gentile: Quintessence of Taste” took place on Monday 12.11.2007 at the refectory of Ossolineum (ul. Szewska 37).

Włodkowica 5) — the second exhibition of this year’s “Enjoy Mondays” (“Polubisz Poniedziałki”) festival presented the graphic works by Adrianna Konopniak–Kaprowicz, with the title: “Faktura, struktura, skrzydło, papierowy neobarok (Invoice, Structure, Wing, Paper Neobaroque)”.
Apart from the usual exhibition inside Mleczarnia, there was also an exhibition of graphic works contained in ice sculpture just outside its entrance. The opening reception was accompanied by a short violin concert.

Pianist Bobo Stenson, an ECM artist, is one of the most sought-after Swedish jazz musicians in the world. He has played with Jan Garbarek, Charles Lloyd, Don Cherry and is one of the few artists whose music can be found on ECM’s series ‘Rarum’ - the best recordings of the label. In the ‘90s Stenson performed regulary with the well-known Polish trumpet player Tomasz Stanko and participated in many international projects and festivals.
Bobo Stenson was awarded the European Jazz Prize in December 2006 in Vienna.

Akosh Szelevenyi was born in 1966 in Debrecen in Hungary. While studying the classical music in Budapest, he discovers jazz, Jimmie Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa. In 1985, some troubles with the administration and the police force him to leave Hungary. In 1986 he crosses the Iron Curtain and arrives in Paris.
At the margin of the traditional French jazz environment, Akosh plays in the bars, where he meets several musicians. One of them is the band “Noir Desir,” and their invitation to take part in their tour subsequently launches his career in the main music circuit. In 2006, he composes the music for the contemporary dance performance by Josef Nadj, and their collaboration piece was presented at the theatrical festival of Avignon.
Akosh’s musical inspiration comes from Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Jonh Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Sun Ra, Charcie Haden and many other musicians and jazz lovers.

Part 1. “Trans-misja” - A Play in Gesture
“A simple story on a less simple subject: about people who are in search of a relationship but at the same time cannot rid of a fear of getting trapped by it”
“Trans-misja” is the result of a co-operation of Artur Borkowski, Ewelina Niewiadomska and Paulina Jóźwin, who are also the excellent casts of the play. The performance was premiered in April 2007 during the Third International Art Festival “Mandala” in Wrocław.

This September, Galeria Entropia opened a new season (20007/2008) with 2 exhibitions: an exhibition of paintings by Urszula Sądel (07-19.09.2007) and an exhibition/installation entitled “Neuro TV: Trybicon” (21.09-09.10.2007). In this episode of our video podcast, you will see the fragments of recordings from the opening receptions of these two exhibitions.
“Neuro TV: Trybicon” stays on display till Tuesday, 09.10.2008. Galeria Entropia (ul. Rzeźnicza 4) is open Mon-Fri, 13:00-19:00.

The opening of the new exhibition by two artists – Robert Lenard and Marek Zalibarek – and the live performance. This exhibition – “Neuro TV: TRYBICON” – is a product of a cooperation between Entropia and “Rita Baum” & “Puzdro” magazines, and experimentally brings together two different worlds in one space: the metal work of Lenard, on the one hand, and the graphic work of Zalibarek, on the other. The exhibition is open till 09.10.2007.
